SPRING INTO SWIMWEAR

by Wesley Monier

It’s that time of year again, when thousands of college students flock to resort locations for a week of test free, study free, homework free fun. Spring Break is right around the corner, whether you are taking a dip in a hot tub after skiing in the Rockies or working on your tan on a beach in Mexico. You know what that means… it’s time for you to show off your hot bathing suit body.

After being able to cozy up in your favorite sweat pants all season long and hide those extra pounds under a warm winter coat, the idea of strutting your stuff in a swimsuit might not sound all that appealing. Just when you thought those trusty sweats might be your uniform for the year, the coolest new swimsuits have hit the stores and once you check them out your thick winter wear will be banished from your wardrobe for good (or at least until next year).

Some great stores to shop for swimsuits in the Austin area include Urban Outfitters, Gadzooks, Tyler’s and Just Add Water. All of these stores carry a multitude of suits in an array of colors, cuts and styles.

The must have color swimsuit of the season is green according to Tori Ortega, a saleswoman at Just Add Water. “Pink has always been a popular color, but we have been selling a lot of green,” said Ortega. Just Add Water specializes in women’s swimwear and has many options that are sure to please you.

Two-pieces are still the suits of choice for college girls. There are some one-piece swimsuits that are becoming more popular with young girls as well. Many modern one-piece designs show almost as much skin as bikinis. Beware of these suits when basking in the sun, as they are sure to produce some attention-grabbing tan lines.

As far as cover-ups go, the days of boardshorts and surf-shorts are long gone and swim-skirts have arrived. The swim-skirt is ideal for ladies to cover up just a little bit more skin than would be seen in a bikini alone. Many swimsuit designers have made them to match their latest suits. A cute little swimskirt can be very versatile; most can be worn in the water, or they can serve as just enough cover up to get you from the hotel room to the pool.

Another great idea for a cover up is the smockdress. You might have seen a smock-dress cover up worn by Jessica Simpson on the reality television show “The Newlyweds.” This Hollywood starlet seems to have started a trend in swimsuit coverups. The smock-dress is a fun option to wear as a cover-up during lunch at the pool or a stroll on the beach.

Smock-dresses can range anywhere between $25 and $140. Many of the new ones have a bohemian flare. Some hot spring colors are white, pastels or even tie died colors.

Cowboy hats are the ultimate accessory to add to your swimsuit this year. These straw hats help create a little shade and protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays all while keeping you up to date and in style. Pair your Spring Break swimsuit with a funky straw cowboy hat and you are sure to turn heads wherever you go.

Don’t let the dreaded thought of trying on swimsuits hold you hostage in your home. With the magnitude of choices this spring season you are bound to find a swimsuit that makes you feel as comfortable as your beloved flannel pajama pants. Swimsuits and Spring Break go hand in hand, so get out and find one that suits you.
